Revamping the content for this Newsletter
Having a rethink about what to write for this newsletter
Over the past couple weeks or so, especially the past few days, I’ve been having a rethink about the content I write for this newsletter.
I have come to the following solidified realization. Well, I knew this pretty much from the start. Substack, this newsletter’s platform, is not really geared toward long-form fiction, even in shorter serialized chunks. This is not a negative, it is just the way Substack is structured. Non-fiction and maybe micro/flash fiction do much better. I even see that in my own reading habits on the platform. I see myself reading much more essays and very short fiction/poetry.
I will be continuing with this newsletter but not with my serialized novels. They are both on season breaks (Flowers Wilt, Weeds Thrive (FWWT) will have it’s season finale on Aug. 16/17th). I have been posting FWWT on Royal Road, which is specifically for the serialized novel format, though more for LitRPG - which I don’t know anything about. However, I think more and more non-gaming/anime-based authors are finding that platform, especially those of us on Substack, so there might be a home for us yet. It is free to read there as it has been here. So, if you have been reading FWWT through this newsletter, then you can continue over on Royal Road and follow me there. I will eventually put up Conspiracy of False Citizens (CFC) there, but I will wait a bit until I get more chapters written; Royal Road readers seem to demand much higher frequency of posting than here, thus need much more content ready to post.
So, what will I be doing for this newsletter? I will be writing more essays on writing/literature/literary concepts/art.... I quite like writing essays and believe will help in my fiction writing as well as perhaps get more eyes on my writing and me in general. I may also keep posting my Gwij microfiction/lore here since they do not depend on the CFC storyline at all plus other short fiction/occasional poetry.
Along with my and Joy Waller’s Urban Writing Haus creative writing studios, I am also starting up my author coaching business called Story Kraken for weird/speculative/grimdark… authors. As of writing this piece, the site is still in flux, but you can get the gist of what I am about and offering. Therefore, I plan on writing essays on my “author who is also in the trenches” coaching style as well as updates and side projects regarding Urban Writing Haus.
I will keep the episodes I have already posted of FWWT and CFC here on Substack for those who want to catch up. These episodes are are also going up on Royal Road (they may be numbered differently because Royal Road readers also seem to tolerate longer chapters, where here I had to split a couple into shorter episodes).
Thus, pleas bear with me as I revamp and rethink this space. I still plan on posting every Sunday night/Monday morning, but will just be different content from what I have been posting.
